Carnival as a Symbol of Joy and Tradition
Did you know that carnival has long been a symbol of joy, celebration, and abundance? This period, which connects winter with spring, has always been full of traditions, music, and delicious food meant to ensure prosperity and a good harvest. And what would carnival be without traditional, homemade, fragrant doughnuts? They are an essential part of these joyful celebrations.
The non-profit organization Ochrana prírody a našich zvykov, in cooperation with Nestville Park, prepared the fourth edition of the “Fašiangová šiška” event, which took place on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at 11:00 AM in the tasting room of the Nestville Distillery exhibition. Visitors enjoyed a sweet journey through a variety of soft doughnut flavors. Each recipe carried a piece of history and love for local traditions. Together, we experienced an event full of laughter, music, and the unmistakable aroma and taste of freshly made homemade doughnuts. Sixteen teams from local pensioners’ associations in the Stará Ľubovňa district presented their unique recipes.
A Sweet Competition Full of Flavor and Tradition
In addition to the sweet feast, visitors also enjoyed a rich cultural program that brought joy to both young and old. Singing, music, and cheerful carnival customs immersed everyone in the atmosphere of the past.
There was also a raffle with attractive prizes and a performance by the music group Zamiškovci. A special guest was the wonderful Monika Kandráčová, who sang traditional songs and dedicated a beautiful poem to her grandmother, moving many to tears.
A Victory Shared by All
And which doughnuts were the best? Although our expert jury went from table to table tasting the finest carnival treats together with visitors, it simply wasn’t enough. Choosing the best recipe proved to be impossible! Even the strict jury could not decide on a single winner.
In the end, everyone agreed that all participants were winners, and each received prizes. As a keepsake, all contestants were given a certificate of appreciation and promised to return next year.
Thank you to everyone who took part in this traditional event. Together, we celebrated carnival just as it should be in our region.
